“Every tourist of the world must visit the Taj Mahal at least once.”
The seat of the incomparable Mughal Empire in India for a long time, Agra is peppered with magnificent architectural gems that are no less than works of art. Bringing together history, architecture and romance, the city of Agra is a treasure trove for travellers in search of architectural brilliance, beauty and old-world charm.
Enjoy The Best of Agra Tourism with The Maharajas’ Express
A living reminder of the Mughal reign’s majestic legacy, the royal structures and grand heritage of Agra is best witnessed on a journey aboard The Maharajas’ Express. It’s nothing short of a journey on a gorgeous “Palace On Wheels” replete with vintage glamour and modern luxury. While most tours simply equate “Agra tourism“ to “Taj Mahal tourism” and fail to offer a holistic experience, The Maharajas’ Express tour cuts through the rich tapestry of Agra’s heritage to showcase its stunning wealth. Apart from Taj Mahal, the Maharajas’ Express itinerary takes guests to the two iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri along with exciting optional excursions like Agra city tour, witnessing a live dance drama called Mohabbat, the Taj Show, a champagne breakfast at Taj Khema and other cultural performances.
Must-Visit Destinations:
- Taj Mahal: A sonnet in white marble, the Taj Mahal is the biggest tourist not just of Agra but the entire nation and it draws throngs of tourists from all over the world who visit India in order to admire this extraordinary epitome of love. Constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, it is believed that it took over 20,000 workers and 20 years to create this masterpiece.
- Agra Fort: Another example of Mughal architecture at its best and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Agra Fort was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1573 with the help of 4,000 workers who laboured for 8 years to create this mesmerising structure. Some of the fort’s most iconic features include the Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Jehangir’s Palace and Khas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Aam. This raw sandstone structure was renovated into an even more impressive palace during the reign of Shah Jahan and years later his own son Aurangzeb imprisoned him in the Agra Fort for 8 years until his death in 1666.
- Fatehpur Sikri: Emperor Akbar’s beloved pet project, the city of Fatehpur Sikri tells an enchanting tale of his valour and relentless work to build a walled city at a little distance from Agra. One of its prime attractions is the Buland Darwaza, a grand red sandstone gateway with 52 steps that lead up to a 175 feet high archway with two intricate inscriptions. Akbar took a keen interest in the city’s layout and architecture and worked for 15 years to build a glorious place replete with beautiful palaces, fascinating buildings, expansive courts and a mosque among others. Best Time To Visit: November to March & August to October
As the summers in Agra are scorching hot, it is advisable to avoid it during the Indian summer months of April to June. The winter months of November to March are perfect for sightseeing with pleasant weather during the day and a chilly air in the night. Must-Try Food: Although meals onboard The Maharajas’ Express are hard to resist, it would be a pity if you didn’t try at least one of mouthwatering traditional delicacies that are synonymous with Agra’s cuisine. On top of the list is the world-famous Agra ka petha, a soft candy sweet dish made from ash gourd that is translucent, dipped in a sugary syrup and absolutely delicious. The town cuisine is also well-known for a variety of tantalizing chaats such as aloo tikki, pani puri, papri chaat, samosa, kachori, etc., that are readily available at every nook and corner.
