Udaipur – A City of Royal Charm

Located in the Southern Rajasthan, Udaipur is a legendary tourist destination, known for its imperial charm. The city has been the Mewar rulers’ capital for centuries. Founded by Maharana Udai Singh in 1553, Udaipur has an opulent antiquity. One day when Maharana Udai Singh went for hunting, he met a sage in the Aravalli Hills that blessed him and advised him to make a kingdom on this land that will be protected by Aravalli Hills.

Mewar Kingdom’s New Capital – Udaipur

Subsequently, Maharana Udai Singh made a residence facing the sparkling waters of Lake Pichola. At that point of time, Chittorgarh was the capital of Mewar Kingdom. Maharana Udai Singh was known as the successor of Sisodia clan (claimed as descendants of Sun God). Sisodias were popular as the oldest ruling family of the world. They were recognized as the powerful warriors in Rajasthan. So, when Chittorgarh was captured by Akbar (the Mughal emperor) in the year 1568, Maharana Udai Singh shifted his kingdom to Udaipur. Right from the time Mughals left, Udaipur started developing as modern city.

Udaipur remained as capital of Mewar Kingdom, until it became the British India princely state in the year 1818. Then, post-independence in 1947, the Udaipur Maharaja gave the place to Government of India. At present, Udaipur and Mewar enjoys position on Rajasthan maps and Maharaja Arvind Singh Mewar is 76th custodian of the dynasty.
