Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh. Legend has it that he was instructed by a holy man meditating on a nearby hill to build a city on that spot. Sheltered by the Aravali ranges, forests and lakes, it was better protected than Chittaurgarh. Maharana Udai Singh was succeeded on his demise by Maharana Pratap who fiercely defended Udaipur from the invading Mughuls. His most memorable achievement was the Battle of Haldighati fought in 1579 against the encroaching Mughul . Udaipur was persistently a victim to foreign onslaught till the British intervened and signed a treaty for the protection of Udaipur. After independence Udaipur has blossomed into a prime tourist location for curious travelers from across the world.
